Administration Department
The Administration Department manages the daily affairs of the Regional District, which involves working closely with the Regional Board, staff, government agencies, and the general public. Responsibilities include efficient management of all Regional District and Regional Hospital District resources, ensuring appropriate procedures and programs are in place for efficient delivery of services to the public, greeting and directing visitors, assembling and distributing Board and committee meeting agendas, preparing meeting minutes, drafting bylaws, conducting elections and referenda, and assisting in the development of certain new services. In addition, Administration oversees labour relations and personnel matters.
Elections and Referenda
Local government elections take place every three years. The Regional District conducts referenda for its Electoral Areas, as well as the Fort Fraser Local Commission. The next local government elections will be held in November, 2011.
Community Services
Community Services assists community groups to develop, establish and operate local services. This includes services which benefit specific communities and which are paid for by the ratepayers within these communities. Some of the services are fire protection, library services, cemetery services, community halls, and the local grants program.
Local Services
Administration administers individual local services for communities within the region. These are services such as fire protection, street lighting or water systems which the specific community has requested, and which are paid for by local ratepayers in that community. In many cases a committee comprising of local representatives is appointed by the Regional Board to handle day-to-day operational issues associated with these services, with departmental staff providing technical and policy advice.
Community Facilities, Grants, and Grants-in-Aid
Funding for grants is budgeted annually. Grants provide assistance to community groups for the purpose of benefiting and enhancing the community. For grants to be considered, written requests must be submitted on the Grant Application Form.
Treaty Advisory Committees
The Smithers Treaty Advisory Committee and the Prince George Treaty Advisory Committee are made up of mayors, councillors, and representatives from the villages, districts, and towns throughout the Regional District. The committees are involved with treaty negotiations taking place with local First Nations, Canada, and British Columbia. The committees represent the interests of local communities and governments.
Communications
The Communications Coordinator is responsible for administration of the Regional District website and for the overall coordination of the Regional District's Trade Show Booths. The Regional News is produced quarterly and distributed to all residents of the Regional District.
