Recreation and Culture
The Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako funds significant recreational and cultural facilities within its boundaries:
- Recreational Facilities
- The Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako owns the Bulkley Valley Regional Pool and Recreation Centre. This facility, which is located in Smithers, provides opportunities for leisure and lane swimming, racquet sports, fitness training and climbing. The facility is funded by the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako through taxation of properties in Smithers, Telkwa and a portion of Electoral Area 'A'.
- The Town of
Smithers owns an arena and several parks that are used by residents and non-residents alike. These facilities are partly funded by contributions from the RDBN through taxation of properties a portion of Electoral Area 'A'.
- The Burns Lake Ice Arena is owned by the Village of Burns Lake. The RDBN makes substantial contributions toward operating and capital costs through taxation of properties in
Burns Lake, Electoral Area 'B' and a portion of Electoral Area 'E'.
- Cultural Opportunities
- The Smithers Library, the
Smithers Museum and the Smithers Arts Council receive funding from the RDBN through taxation of properties in a portion of Electoral Area 'A'.
- The Burns Lake Library and the
Burns Lake Museum are funded primarily by contributions from the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako through taxation of properties in Burns Lake, Electoral Area 'B' and Electoral Area 'E'.
- The Fraser Lake Library is partly funded by contributions from the RDBN through taxation of properties in Electoral Area 'D'.
- The District of Vanderhoof has several recreational facilities, a library and a museum, which are partially funded by contributions from the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako through taxation of properties in Electoral Area 'F'.
- The Fort St. James Library is partly funded by contributions from the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako through taxation of properties in Electoral Area 'C'.
- T.V. Rebroadcasting
The Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako is the primary funding source for T.V. and radio rebroadcasting services within its boundaries. These facilities rebroadcast popular T.V. and radio stations to provide service to areas that would not otherwise get reception without cable or satellite. These services are provided to most municipal and rural residents throughout the RDBN.
